Reduce accidental selections

2 minute read | January 31, 2023

Some AAC users may accidentally tap buttons multiple times or activate buttons near the one they actually want. There are a few settings in the Access Method Options that can help with this.

Hold Duration

Hold Duration sets a minimum time that you have to hold down on a button before releasing it. If you touch the button for less time, it will not activate. This can be helpful for users with hand tremors who may accidentally brush buttons. To set a hold duration:

  1. In the right corner of the bottom toolbar, tap the Options* Options icon button.
  2. Go to Access Method.
  3. Hold down on the + button until you reach the duration you want. Use the - button if you go too far. Or, tap inside the window showing with the number to bring up the numbers keyboard. Type the duration you want, up to a maximum of 5.0 seconds. Then, tap < Options to close the keyboard and return to the main Options.

Select on Release

Select on Release ignores multiple fingers on the screen. This can be helpful for users who can’t reliably isolate a pointer finger.

Select on Release has two modes: First Finger Up and First Finger Down. First Finger Up is the default. Proloquo2Go will outline each button any finger is touching. To select, lift the finger touching the button you want. First Finger Down identifies the first finger to touch the screen and tracks it as you drag it. When the button you want is highlighted, you lift your hand (or the finger touching it) to make a selection.

To turn on Select on Release:

  1. In the right corner of the bottom toolbar, tap the Options [Options icon] button.
  2. Go to Access Method.
  3. Toggle Select on Release to ON.
  4. If you want to use First Finger Down, go to Configuration > Mode. Select First Finger Down. You can also change the appearance of the Visual Cue in Configuration. After activating First Finger Down, you can go back into Configuration and add an Auditory Cue if you want. To learn more about auditory cues, see Get auditory cues.
Select on Release options

Select on Release does disable swiping up or down pages. To move up or down, you will need to add Paging Buttons.

Prevent accidental repeats

For some users, it may help to stop buttons from activating again for a certain amount of time after first pressing them. You can learn more about settings for this in Change response to repeated taps.
