Edit a PODD book

4 minute read • March 30, 2023

You can customize and edit the PODD books you create using simPODD. You can add or edit buttons, customize lists, and add important information to pages that ask for it.

Enter Edit Mode for PODD books

  1. Go to Options Menu Small, then Books.
  2. Tap the book you would like to edit. To navigate within pages of the book, tap the icon in the top left corner to see a list of available pages.
  3. Tap Edit to enter Edit Mode.
  4. Tap on the item you would like to edit.
  5. You have many of the same controls as when in Edit Mode for digital page sets (except for the Speech field). You can control the background and border color, as well as the text and images used.
  6. Tap Done when you are finished editing.

Create an item and enter text

  1. Go into the page where you want to add your item. Then, tap Edit Edit Small in the toolbar.
  2. Select an item to edit by tapping it.
  3. You can add an item in any empty grid space. Tap the empty space to select it. You may need to go to the next page to find one.
  4. In Label, type the text you want to display in the item, then tap Done.

Choose an image for your item

SimPODD will try to guess a symbol from your item's text. SimPODD will also suggest alternative symbols. If you like one of these better, just tap it to add it to your item.

If simPODD has not suggested a symbol, or you don’t like symbols suggested, there are three options:

  1. Symbols: If you would like to search simPODD’s library of symbols, tap More Symbols.
  2. Pictures: Tap the pictures Picture Small on the top right of the Symbol menu. You will need to give simPODD access to your photos for this.
  3. Take a Picture: Use your device’s camera to take a photo to put on the item. Tap the camera Camera Small on the top right of the Symbol menu.

When you are done editing, tap Done in the top right corner of the screen. This will close Edit Mode and save your changes.

Add a new page to your PODD book

  1. Go into the page where you want to create an item that will link to your new page. Then, tap Edit Edit Small in the toolbar.
  2. Select an item to edit by tapping it.
  3. You can add an item in any empty grid space. Tap the empty space to select it. You may need to go to the next page to find one.
  4. In Label, type the text you want to display in the item.
  5. Tap Edit on the right of the Go to Page field and tap Link to New Page.
  6. Choose a template for the new page and tap Next.
  7. Select the Page Position in the book and tap Next.
  8. Enter the Tab Name. Please know that Tab Names cannot be changed once entered. Tap Next.

The button is now linked to a new page. The number of the page will be shown in the top right corner of the button. You can now navigate to the page to edit it.

When you are done editing, tap Done in the top right corner of the screen. This will close Edit Mode and save your changes.

Differences between PODD digital page sets and PODD books in simPODD

simPODD is the only app that offers electronic and paper PODD the same app.

However, please note that it is not possible to directly print the electronic page sets in simPODD. Electronic page sets and paper PODD books are completely separate in simPODD.

We worked in close collaboration with Gayle Porter, the creator of PODD. She has designed PODD books and electronic pages sets in different ways:

  • In the electronic page sets there is no navigation menu that you need in the books.
  • Electronic page sets are only available with 15 and 60 buttons per page.
  • There is a full range of PODD books available, from 9 to 100 buttons per page, in one-page or two-page opening.

To access the PODD book section in simPODD, you need to purchase a Yearly Subscription. Then, please go into Options > Books and follow the steps on the screen to create a PODD book.

Once you have created and edited your book you can export it to a computer, review the PDF and then print it.
