April is Autism Acceptance Month, and more specifically, April 2 is Autism Acceptance Day! No, this is not a typo. We are shifting from autism awareness to autism acceptance. We need a positive change!
Nobody is the same
When you look at your family and friends, you notice that everyone is different. This variety is what makes the world an interesting and beautiful place. Like anyone else, people with autism want to be accepted just the way they are. Even though awareness is important and a great start, we should not only be aware of the existence of autism - we should aim to understand, accept, respect, include and support autistic people.
Autism acceptance initiative
The initiative for autism acceptance originates from 2011, when Paula Durbin-Westby, who has autism, created a Facebook event titled Autism Acceptance Day after hearing from others who felt hurt by traditional awareness events that didn’t highlight positive aspects of autism.
Get to know them
That is why this month we will share useful resources and stories, both videos and blogs, about adults and kids with autism. Get to know them. See how wonderful they are. And accept them for who they are.
