Add the iPad to a routine

2 minute read

DO: Start by making sure you have the iPad during everyday routines.

You have been learning about how important it is for you and the AAC user to have access to AAC all the time. Let’s start by building it into a routine.

Step 1: Identify a routine

How can you make it easy to use Proloquo? Add it to an existing routine. Make it a habit! Ready?

Think about your daily routines you share with the AAC user. Which routine do you share that you both enjoy?

For example, making breakfast, sitting down to eat, or turning on the water for your child's bath. Write it down.

Step 2: Write down your routine a new way

We asked you to write down one routine you do every day. For example: making breakfast or sitting down to eat.

Now, rewrite your routine to include having the iPad with you. Here are some examples to help:

  • When I wake up the AAC user, I will have the iPad with me.
  • When I sit down to eat with the AAC user, I will put the iPad on the table next to my plate.
  • When I get the AAC user dressed for the day, I will have the iPad.

What routine did you choose?

Tape it to your mirror, refrigerator, or coffee mug to remind you.

Step 3: Add the iPad to the routine

Now, it's time to practice having the iPad with you during the routine you picked for the next four days. The iPad needs to be within your and the AAC user's reach. That's all you need to do.

Do not encourage or discourage the AAC user if they choose to explore Proloquo during this routine.

You are responsible for having the iPad with you in this routine. Everyone needs to get used to the iPad being there. You may be surprised by how challenging this can be in the beginning. This is why we ask you to do this for four days.

Don’t worry about using Proloquo with the AAC user just yet.

During these next four days, you are making it a habit to have the iPad with you. You will be tempted to explore and use the app. That’s great!

Today is day 1. Think about the routine you chose and make sure the iPad is right there in that routine - close to you and the AAC user.

Remember: When I ……, I will have the iPad with me.

Nothing more and nothing less. So have fun, start making good habits today, and trust the process.
